In France, the restaurant service is often included in the bill, but the tip is not – these are two seperate things.

The staff are paid a living wage, and tips (usually 10%) are shared by the entire team (not just your server) and by law, must be left in cash. You will not see a place to add it to your credit card so carry extra coins & cash.

That said, what most people consider attentive service in their part of the world is considered “helicopter hovering” in France –  intrusive to diners who are at the restaurant to enjoy each other’s company, not to be interrupted constantly by the server.

I know it seems strange, but don’t expect them to anticipate your needs or be mind readers. If you need anything, you’ll have to speak up and ask for it.
